What is a Big and Little to You?

November 21, 2012

We asked our readers to share with us why their Big and/or Little(s) relationships were important to them.  We felt that we couldn’t sum up your words any better than the way you said them, so we shared what some of you had to say!

  1. Why is the Big/Little relationship important to you? What do you love most about your Big or Little?
(Comment on this post and YOUR thoughts could be quoted in our next blog! Make sure to let us know what sorority you are in!!)

My big is someone I can look up to and count on the rest of my life. It is so much bigger than just a big, she is my sister for life. No judgement will ever be laid upon me by her and it is great to know that someone has your back through college and life. :)

My littles are two of the most amazing women that I know. With one being 3 years older than me (she joined as a senior when I was a sophomore) and the other 2 and a half years younger, I’ve gotten to have quite an interesting experience guiding both of them. But even as I’ve helped them through their time in the chapter, they’ve both taught me so many things as well. Because of our personalities, we really have become the perfect family for each other. And what I think I’m most proud of is that despite the almost 6 year age difference between my littles and the fact that I took them a year apart (after my first little had already graduated!), they have become spectacular friends and love each other as if I had taken them as twiddles. They’re genuine love and caring for not only each other, but everyone around them makes me the happiest big in the world. I truly wouldn’t be the woman I am today had I not met either of them. The same is true of my big (and twiddle). These women made my dream of what I would find in a sorority a reality. I wanted true sisterhood and people in my life who would love me unconditionally and I got just that.

Most people say there bigs are an inspiration to them, however for me it’s the opposite. My littles are two of the most wonderful women I’ve ever met! One is a first generation American citizen who escaped with her parents from Bosnia when she was four. Seeing how thankful she is for the peace and freedom in our country reminds me to be thankful for everything, because someone I know and love very much didn’t have that just a few short years ago. My other little is just as remarkable as her twid. She has nothing but standards in mind for every decision she makes. She also has her future in mind and I truly believe it is impossible for her to make a bad decision. My littles inspire me to not only become a better woman, but to be more involved in my sorority and the lives of people who don’t get to have the little things I take for granted every day.

I’m blessed to not only have 1 little, but 4! All of my littles bring something different to the table. They are all beautiful individuals that have not only shape me into the person I am, but have greatly affected my chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma. Even though we are all have different personalities, we still are the same. My littles are my rock; they have each helped me in some way go through this crazy journey called life. Even though we may fight, I know at the end of the day that they are my family. I am so proud of each and every one of them, and the legacy I will be leaving behind when I graduate next semester will be strong. I have faith in each of these wonderful women who I call my littles <3

My Delta Zeta Big Sister and I did not have sisters growing up. I looked up to her like I would have my own real sis. We became very close. She was my Maid of Honor and is Godmother to my son; I’m Godmother to her daughter. She was a legacy, and I al…See More
